Wetlands

Wetlands provide a filter for water, habitat for many plants and animals, and help control flooding. Wetlands filter pollutants out of the water. The wetland soils and vegetation slow the movement of the water, filtering pollutants and providing clean water for aquatic life. Another important benefit wetlands provide is flood control. Wetland soils and plants hold water, preventing it from menacing nearby communities and waterways and cutting down on the amount of erosion that heavy rains cause. These ecosystems provide a unique habitat that supports specific birds, animals, and plants. Native wetland plants are naturally managed by periodic droughts. Exotic species, such as purple loosestirife, are a challenge to the diversity and survival of this habitat.
