Woodland

Even though they are aesthetically pleasing, woodlands are not native to the Korth Park area. The area that is now woodlands was originally an oak savannah, a prairie that had no trees besides occasional oaks. Over a hundred years ago, prairie fires ceased to frequent the prairie, resulting in woodland areas. Burr Oak trees survive these fires because they have extremely thick bark, preventing the fire from damaging the tree. Other trees were destroyed by these fires periodically. This specific woodland was pasture land for cattle until 1995. One plan for this woodland area is to restore it to an oak opening. This may require using controlled fires. Many non-native plants are presently in this woodland, including honeysuckle, boxelder and garlic mustard.
