Have you heard of the Raw Food Movement? It is growing in popularity
on the east and west coasts (aren’t you glad you live in the Midwest?), and
is just what its name implies: it advocates eating all food, including meat,
raw. Mmmmm, nummy, nummy. What’s their motivation? A longing
for more primitive times? Proving they can survive without Maytag? Here’s
a better way to prove your mettle—spend a summer on Rock Lake in motorless
mobility! Use “raw” energy!
Several selfless sailors are willing to help young people harness that energy
(their own and the wind’s) by teaching sailing. What a golden opportunity
to learn a lifelong sport, with benefits ranging from peace and relaxation
when the wind is light, to “extreme sport” status in a race with heavy wind,
to the high-risk satisfaction of sailing across the Pacific. (the last not
recommended, speaking as a parent whose son did it) And you will also
have the satisfaction of knowing that you have contributed to the health
of Rock Lake by NOT cutting up the Eurasian water milfoil (every little piece
can root), not stirring up the lake bed, not releasing pollutants into the
lake, not causing a wake that erodes the shoreline.
If this interests you, contact Jim Colegrove, Alex Mulligan, Andrew Stiles,
or RLIA through our website, www.rocklake.ORG. (This
is not a RLIA project, but it is the type of activity that serves the purpose
of our mission, so we are happy to promote it.)
Here’s to raw energy! (and raw cookie dough)
